FEATURE: PROFILE OF A CREATIVE RURAL ECONOMY
Prince Edward County has captivated the attention of Queen's University professor, Betsy Donald, and her senior geography class. Donald and her class set out from Kingston for a tour of the County in February 2008 because, she says, the County is unique in its efforts as a creative rural economy.
Unlike tours which wander from site to site, this specially-designed tour was led by a local historian to specific locations with organized speakers. Donald ensured her class was armed with intense, directed questions designed to peel back the layers of the County's economy.
Students were challenged to make a case study of the synergies and dynamics that drive the County's success, and figure out what - if not big box stores or factories - drives a creative rural economy.
Their work was packaged in a report presented to the Prince Edward Lennox and Addington Community Futures Development Corporation in April 2008. Donald says the County could inspire other communities struggling in the face of lost industries.
